Last weekend, Portuguese artist Nuno Viegas, also known as METIS, completed his latest mural in Vienna as part of the Calle Libre Festival. Using a combination of Montana GOLD and BLACK spray paints, Nuno brought to life a deeply personal narrative in his work, reacting to his new experience of parenthood.
Reflecting on the significance of family and legacy, Nuno explains:
“This piece comes in reaction to a new stage of my life—parenthood. It celebrates not only parenthood but also family. As an artist reacting to what of life touches me deeper and moves me the most, my current body of work is focused on a parallel between this new generation to come and the handoff of the graffiti writing legacy. The passage of the unwritten rules and codes that set this game that still runs our cities.”
Born in Faro, Portugal, in 1985, and raised in Quarteira, Nuno Viegas began his artistic journey with graffiti in 1999. He is the founder of the art collective Policromia Crew and has made a name for himself through his unique style, which contrasts the visually aggressive and often gritty world of traditional graffiti with a peaceful and clean representation in his works.
Nuno’s art is a tribute to those who dedicate their lives to the graffiti scene. His work continuously honors graffiti writers who “keep it real” in an era where graffiti often gets blurred with street art. Nuno currently resides in his hometown of Quarteira, Portugal.
